BIOGRAPHY AND WORKS BY A DESIGNER PATRICIA URQUIOLA.

Patricia Urquiola burst into the world of furniture design all of a sudden. To such a success that has been gained by her, people are going in course of decades, but Patricia seems not to be told about it. Having received her nickname "Hurricane", she successfully confirms it, providing more and more challenges not only to the surrounding world, but to herself.

It all started in 1961 in a small town of Oviedo. Spanish province of Asturias, where Patricia came from, gave much to the future designer. Hot blood of the Basques became a real fuel in Patricia’s body  - she started not to differentiate herself at school, but also decided to leave her place of birth in order to achieve something more. Her father, an engineer, who dreamed of becoming an architect from childhood, perceived his daughter's desire with a smile - he believed in her from the first minute of her life.

Her education went on a fairly practical route - Madrid, and then - Italy, where in 1989 Patricia received a diploma from the Milan Polytechnic Institute. After its graduation, the future designer got an invitation to become a teacher. Her scientific leader was Achille Castiglioni, a designer and architect, whose name was already known throughout Italy. It was he who probably determined the future of Patricia.

The beginning of an interesting design path is associated with a landmark meeting with Vico Magistretti, an enthusiastic urbanist and furniture designer. It was in the collaboration with him Patricia invented a Loom sofa, and a bit later - a Chaise Longue chair. The explosive nature allowed the designer not only to work within the profession, but also to teach at the same time - the walls of Domus Academy still remember her course "Design of exhibitions". At the same time dozens of seminars were held. Do not forget about the awards – among other ones  -  A & W Designer of the Year, as well as a special prize Design Prize Cologne look quite impressive.

Currently, Patricia is involved in a close cooperation with the company Cassina. Being one of art directors, together with such designers as Gaetano Pesche, Philippe Starck, Jaime Aion and others she continues to move our world to the beautiful. In Patricia’s works it is difficult to find symmetry. She admits that she does not aspire to do everything according to the canons - the "landscape" style suits her more. In furniture, she tries to give natural comfort to the body, even if it makes, for example, a person sitting on a chair to lean in one direction. Another distinguishing feature of Urquiola is the desire to combine space. Her collections SPACE Mangas and Plait perfectly complement each other, getting the opportunity to combine these elements in the interior.

I would also like to highlight the project of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Barcelona. Patricia's design office was entrusted everything - from the creation of charm and atmosphere to lighting and design of each square meter. The project was large-scale, even according to modern standards - 17 000 square meters of hotel area, and everything on them - rooms, restaurants, swimming pools, spas, shops, etc.

The final look of the project delighted not only hotel owners but also visitors – people started booking the rooms half a year -a year in advance , and some of Patricia's design solutions became truly masterpieces –what is worth a ceiling in the reception hall of visitors, consisting of bank cells in tribute to the Bank, located earlier in the building. Art objects, furniture, light - Patricia Urquiola put her hand to everything.
